Hi, this is Ana Luiza of inglesonline.com.br and here’s another episode of the inglesonline podcast. Today I’m going to talk about a couple of ways to use the word TAKE. So there are many many different ways to use take, there are several phrasal verbs, idiomatic expressions, slang expressions that use take, so here I’m going to focus first on this kind of situation… I’m going to give you an example: My sister moved to Italy a few years ago and she didn’t speak Italian when she first got there. She had to study Italian for about one year and a half before she was able to speak fluently.

So here’s how I’m going to say this: it took her 18 months (eighteen, that’s 1, 8) so it took her eighteen months to become fluent in Italian. It took her about one year and a half, right, eighteen months, one year and a half. It took her about one year and a half to really speak Italian fluently.

Here’s another example: some time ago I had a car and I used to drive everywhere. If I needed to go to the pharmacy just around the block, I would drive. If I had to go to the bank which was, like, two blocks away, I would drive. So one day I sold my car, and during the first couple of weeks after I sold my car, I had to get used to being a pedestrian again. You know, look both ways before crossing a street… Making sure I had everything I needed in my pocket before I left the house and so on. So I could say it took me a couple of weeks to get used to being a pedestrian again, or even it took me a while, this is a very common expression, it took me a while, it took me a while to get used to being a pedestrian again. So, whenever someone asks you, How long did it take you to do something? You can answer, Well, it took me a week, it took me three hours, it took me a year to do this. For example it took me four hours to read this book. That means that I read the entire book in four hours.

So what are your examples of how long it took you to do something? There’s no rush here, take your time. Take your time means, you can think about this question and come back tomorrow to post your answer, or you can come back next week, or next month… It doesn’t matter how long it takes you to answer this question. Take your time.

Talk to you soon.

Key expressions:

  • It took me (a year to do something), It took her (18 months to speak Italian)
  • It took me a while
  • How long did it take you (to do something)?
  • Take your time

Glossary

just around the block = ali na esquina, super perto

I had to get used to being = eu tive que me acostumar a ser

it took me a while = levou um tempo pra eu… Eu demorei um tempo para…

whenever = sempre que

there’s no rush = não tem pressa

Estou esperando as respostas de vocês! How long did it take you to do… something?

Ana

It took about five years to I learn to play saxophone. That’s very cool. Keep doing it, Ana Luiza.

Olá Ana,
Parabéns pelos podcasts, estou começando a ouvir agora, quero treinar bastante “listenning”, como você sabiamente sugeriu. Sua pronúncia é super clara! É ótimo para ouvir e aprender.
Tive uma dúvida sobre a expressão: It took me…
Diante de uma pergunta: How long did “it take” you to do something?
It took ME, It took HER.
Essa é uma expressão, cuja maneira de usar exige o pronome oblíquo ou eu poderia dizer: I took a while… por exemplo.
Obrigada pela atenção.

Hi Ana!

It took me three years and a half to finish my English course and I’m learning a lot of new things (and remember a lot of them too) thanks to your website. So thank you very much!

Kisses!

Marília 05/07/2011

Well some people might say… Wow it didn’t take me that much to speak English fluently.. but I forgot to say that I’m a self learner, since I’ve never been to an English speaking country before and I can speak and understand the language clearly. It’s been awesome to learn new expressions here… such expressions you can’t easily learn or get used to them unless you live in a english speaking country…

Marilia 05/07/2011

It took me many years to learn how to speak english fluently and I’m still learning with this amazing website. Thanks a lot!!!

Ana Luiza 03/03/2010

Oi Osvaldo

Osvaldo Junior 03/03/2010

Hi dear Ana. I think I have a tip to you.
Não falo mais “Hello, here is Junior of…”.
AAH, your site is doing very well (:-?)

Ana Luiza 12/02/2010

Suelen, thanks. Keep listening to English and there’s nothing you can do to not become a good speaker…

Suelen Almeida 11/02/2010

Ops, I forgot to answer.
So, it takes me a year to become a confident english speaker. :D

Suelen Almeida 11/02/2010

Hi, Luiza! I loved that podcast. I just realized that you are brazilian when you said – inglesonline.com.br – the third time. That idiomatic expression goes straight to my precios english notebook, which I have with me all the time. Thanks for the tip, also I loved your accent.

rosanalima 01/02/2010

muito obrigado vcs sao muitissimo legais…

Ana Luiza 27/01/2010

Ricardo – you’re welcome! glad to know you’ve enjoyed it.

Marcelo – couple of significa 2 mesmo..

Marcelo

Ricardo Santos 25/01/2010

Hi Ana Luiza I´d like to say that your teachings on this podcast are really very good.
About this lesson what can I say? It took me half hour to learn a lot about how to use the expression to take when I need to say about the time that I spent to do something… great…
Thanks a lot

Ricardo

Ana Luiza 25/01/2010

Marcelo, Penha e Maria Helena, obrigada smile É um prazer.

Penha 22/01/2010

It took me one hour to translate it, but I enjoy to making it.I would like audio em todas as lições. Thank you. Kisses.

Maria Helena 21/01/2010

Ana, congratulations, very easy to understand.

Marcelo Santos 20/01/2010

Show hein Ana, você é dez! Parabéns!

Ana Luiza 19/01/2010

How long did it take you to…

How long did it take you from A to B?

How long did it take you do hiking trip ? 19/01/2010

How long did it take you do hiking. ?Por acaso esta fase está certa?

Ana Luiza 19/01/2010

Luiz Carlos, great example!

elias, Georgete, Fernandokant thanks!

Erika, no problem.

Hi Josimar, I was born in the US so I had kind of a jumpstart raspberry Mas depois de 8 anos de volta ao Brasil, eu mantenho ouvindo muito,  MUITO inglês, se não esquece mesmo.

Ana Luiza 19/01/2010

Great ARandir.

Fernandokant 19/01/2010

Congratulations on the series of podcasts.  This is an excelente way to learn English. Please keep posting theim.

Josimar Machado. 19/01/2010

One more time, thanks, that post helps a lot. And i have a question: How long did it take you, Ana Luiza, to get fluency?

Erika Souza 19/01/2010

Erika

Georgete- 17/01/2010

My English is basic, but when I heard this, I realized how much I can improve . Congratulations and thanks.

Sergio Nunes Martins 16/01/2010

Estou gostando.

elias 16/01/2010

Uma pronuncia muito clara,de facil entendimento. show de bola, thank you.

Luiz Carlos 15/01/2010

Hi, This is Luiz Carlos. Let me try :

Last year I’ve been in Canada studying english. And I had to live with a homestay family . It was very hard to me at the beginning, you know, they a have a different way to deal with the every day tasks. It took me a while to get used to living like them.

Arandir 15/01/2010

How long does it take you to go to school?

How long did it take you to travel to Brazil?

How long will it take you to check your e-mails?

Ana Luiza 15/01/2010

SIm Erika, foi erro de digitação… Eu digo There’s no rush no áudio.

Erika Souza 15/01/2010

Bom dia Ana! Tudo bem? Adorei o post. There’s to rush here…..”  (lá em baixo, no finalzinho, qndo vc explica sobre “Take your time”) :

“So what are your examples of how long it took you to do something? There’s to rush here, take your time.”

“So what are your examples of how long it took you to do something? There’s NO rush here, take your time.”

Agradeço se puder tirar minha dúvida…valeu!!

Um abraço,
Erika
