Gramática inglesa: WOULD (passado)

Inglês - Gramática inglesa WOULD (passado)

Hi everyone! A leitora Bruna escreveu perguntando qual é a diferença entre used to e would. Used to é usado para falar sobre ações que ocorriam com frequência no passado. E quem já estuda inglês há um tempinho provelmente conhece o Would em sentenças como Would you like some coffee? ou I would do that if I had money.

Só que o ‘would’ também é usado no mesmo sentido de ‘used to’: para descrever ação repetida no passado.

When we were kids, we would always (we always used to) stop by the ice cream shop on the way home from school.

We used to wake up early on Christmas day.
Then we used to go to the living room and wait for my mom to arrive.
After she arrived, we used to open the presents, and then we used to have breakfast. After she arrived, we would open the presents.

Veja:

We used to / would wake up early on Christmas morning.
Then, we’d go to the living room and wait for my mom to arrive.
After she arrived, we would open the presents, and then we’d have breakfast.

I used to practice volleyball when I was in college.
Veja:

When I was 20 I would go jogging every day.

Se você disser apenas I would go jogging every day, você está dizendo Eu correria todo dia. Se não for especificar quando a ação ocorria, use ‘used to’: I used to go jogging every day.

  • Would não é usado com be para descrever um “estado”; apenas ‘used to’. Por exemplo, Ele era muito inteligente: He used to be very intelligent, e não He would be very intelligent.

Atividade

would-ingles-2

A minha: When I was a teenager, I would have lunch and then walk to school. Then after school I’d walk back home with a friend.

When I was a little girl/boy… Fiquem ligados, pois é quase garantido que a pessoa vai usar would e used to!

When I was younger, about my twelve years old, i used to wake up and go to school usually without breakfast. I would come back home, and after lunch, I would play tag and other games with my friends the whole afternoon. Then I would go back home and would go through the evening in front of my television to watch my favorite cartoons while eating dinner.

Ana,

Estava assistindo um documentário e o cara falou a seguinte frase: “And this would be the dance hall” (só para você entender o contexto, o cara estava mostrando um lugar onde ele costumava fazer festas nos anos 60).

Veja se eu entendi direito… na explicação fala que para não se usa o Would + Be….

Mas na informalidade, no dia-a-dia acontece das pessoas usarem o Would + Be?

Obrigado.

Hi, Ana Luiza!
I like so much to listen your podcasts when I’m going to work and, sometimes, in my home too…Your diction is so clear! It’s is the first time I’m writing here… but it’s not the last.
About the post, my example is: “When I was a child I used to play on the street. Nowadays, it’s impossible.” and “I used to see just the Steve’s videos to practice my English, now I have others options, and the bests are the your and Steve’s.”
Congratulations for both! ;)
See u, dear…

    Ana 31/10/2011

He used to be very intelligent.
He was very intelligent.
Estou estudando o emprego do Would e Used to.

Veja:
When I was 20 I would go jogging every day.

Se você disser apenas I would go jogging every day, você está dizendo Eu correria todo dia. Se não for especificar quando a ação ocorria, use ‘used to’: I used to go jogging every day.”
———————————————————

Então você quer diser que se eu disser “When I was 20 I would go jogging every day” esta certo, pois estou dizendo o momento em que ocorria a ação(when i was 20)?

    Ana 01/11/2011

    Correto!
