Como digo em inglês Aí já é demais

That's where I draw the lineLembra da dica da semana passada, que falavra sobre a expressão You may wanna think about…?

A inspiração veio da série My Boys, que provavelmente nem chegou a passar no Brasil e foi extinta há alguns anos. O dialogozinho que eu usei foi esse:

– You may wanna think about letting him win.
– Oh, God. That’s where I draw the line.

Pra recapitular, uma amiga recomendava à outra You may wanna think about letting him win, ou, em outras palavras “É melhor você deixá-lo ganhar” no jogo de pôquer. Só que a outra discorda totalmente do conselho, e diz Oh, God. That’s where I draw the line. A sentença depois de Oh, God quer dizer, literalmente, “é aí que eu desenho a linha”.

Que linha é essa? É uma linha metafórica, que simboliza o limite para o que ela vai fazer pelo namorado. Deixar o cara ganhar no pôquer não dá! Em português, a gente poderia dizer

“Aí já é demais!”

Uma situação muito comum para se usar essa expressão é quando alguém está te dizendo o que fazer em determinada situação. Você está hesitando um pouco, achando meio “puxado”, mas está ouvindo pois o resultado vale a pena. Daí a pessoa chega num ponto em que coisa começa a ficar estranha/ruim/absurda demais pra você, e você diz That’s where I draw the line.

Veja mais um exemplo:

(John) So, you’re going hiking next weekend! Fantastic. You may wanna think about getting some new boots.
(Richard) Right.
(John) Also, don’t forget your sunscreen [protetor solar]. It’s essential.
(Richard) Of course.
(John) A backpack is also a must for newbies [uma mochila também é fundamental para novatos]. You should bring your own mineral water…
(Richard) Sure.
(John) … as well as nutritious snacks such as seaweed [e também lanchinhos nutritivos como alga marinha].
(Richard) OK, that’s where I draw the line. No seaweed for me [Sem alga do mar pra mim]. Beef jerky OK? [Pode ser carne seca?]

O que uma pessoa poderia dizer pra você, que faria você responder “OK, that’s where I draw the line”? Isso varia de pessoa pra pessoa, é claro. No meu caso, se alguém estivesse tentando me convencer a fazer alguma atividade física fictícia:

(someone) You’ll have to be disciplined.
(me) OK.
(someone) Also, you’ll have to shell out a few bucks [gastar uns cobres] for the equipment.
(me) Sure, that’s to be expected.
(someone) You’ll also have to take four types of vitamins in the morning…
(me) Really? Well…
(someone) … and, of course, you’ll have to get up at 4 in the morning in order to get the most out of the exercises [para aproveitar os exercícios ao máximo].
(me) OK, that’s where I draw the line. There’s no way I’ll wake up at 4 in order to exercise.

Tente se lembrar de alguma situação em que alguém estava tentando te convencer a fazer alguma coisa, e então chegou um momento em que você disse That’s where I draw the line (ou Aí já é demais), e deixe um comentário!

Hi, Ana Luiza:
I´m enjoying to study this English you teach of a so beautiful way. I had stopped of studying, for the last 10 days
because I had been travelling abroad, in a group of 40 persons, through Spain, France, Switzerland and German. It was a very wearing travel, because we had to accomplish a lot of appointments. Even if, I had some oportunities of speaking English and I think i got it with success. I spoke with several kind of peoples and I felt my English flewing a little easily. I felt proud of myself and happy. Part of this improvement in English that I feel, I owe you, through the “inglês online” that you teach me and to a lot of others students.

Today Is was working with a Chinese boy. So, after finish the work, he told to me.
Hey man, now you need search for this device is this batch (the batch has 5000 devices).
So, I told him:
-You must be kidding! That’s where I draw the line!

You have to wake up! You have to sleep! You have to climb to the next floor! You have to falling in love! You must wake up early! You must not sleep well! You have to go out!, do that! don’t do this,….

Are you kidding? You’re very kind! That’s enough! That’s where I draw the line!

Ah, olha só… Não sabia. Eu assumi que não tinha vindo pois os EUA lançam TANTAS séries novas que acho q não dá pra espremer tudo na nossa programação. Esse é um dos primeiros episódios, se não me engano, na 1a temporada.
