ATENÇÃO: O texto a seguir, que foi adaptado do livro “Crazy English: the Ultimate Joy Ride Through Our Language” por Richard Lederer, mostra paradoxos da língua inglesa. É um exemplo muito inteligente de como podemos nos confundir com as peculiaridades e sutilezas de uma língua. Muitas coisas que falamos não fazem sentido ou não têm uma explicação específica porque são faladas assim.

And why is it that writers write, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn’t the plural of booth beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So, one moose, 2 meese? One index, two indices? Is cheese the plural of choose?

If teachers taught, why didn’t preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

In what language do people recite at a play, and play at a recital?

@>—- fingers = dedos da mão
@>—- fing - Este verbo não existe!

@>—- grocers = comerciantes (de mercados)
@>—- groce - Este verbo também não existe. O escritor deste trecho só está “zoando”.

@>—- teachers taught = professores/as ensinaram
@>—- preachers preached (não “praught”) = pregadores pregaram

@>—- hammer(s), substantivo = martelo(s)
@>—- hammer (não “ham), verbo = martelar / martelam

@>—- The plural of tooth (dente) is teeth.
@>—- The plural of booth (cabina) is booths (não “beeth”).

@>—- One goose (ganso), 2 geese.
@>—- One moose (alce), 2 moose (não “meese”)

@>—- One index, two indices
@>—- Não existe o plural cheese. Cheese é “uncountable” (não contável). Dizemos “a piece of cheese”, “two pieces of cheese”, “different types of cheese”, etc.

@>—- A vegetarian eats vegetables = Um vegetariano come vegetais
@>—- humanitarian = humanitário - Não é alguém que come pessoas!

@>—- people recite at a play = pessoas recitam em uma peça
@>—- people play at a recital = pessoas tocam em um recital
